This is the approximate location of Paraje De San Luis, their campsite for August 21,1776. Friar Dominguez writes in his journal about the final league of the day, “we reached El Rio de San Pedro and halted in a small meadow it has here, naming it El Paraje de San Luis.” The actual campsite was most likely across Highway 141 at the very meadow that is still by the water,
which we now call the San Miguel River.
Take time to read the sign recognizing this important site along the 1776 Expedition route. The sign now on CDOT’s right of way was provided as part of the Bicentennial celebration of 1976. The map on the sign shows the location here, plus follow the journey into Utah, Arizona and back to Sante Fe.
