That hill you just traveled down has a couple names here in the West End, originally named Brooks Hill by the settlers, then Power Plant Hill by the miners when we had a working power plant, which was also at this very location. However, the Spaniards called it Rivera’s Hill because of the attention Don Juan Rivera gave to it in his journal from 1765. Friar Domínguez writes: “…descended the mesa down another steep but short incline, and it is the one which Don Juan Maria de Rivera in his diary dwells
on as being very trying.” Two of the men who traveled with Rivera became guides for the Domínguez – Escalante Expedition. They recognized this hill as the one Rivera mentions in his Journal.

Between Stops 5 and 6 the journal reads.” … Then we traveled along the edge of El Rio de San Pedro (upstream) for a league toward the northeast.” Measure 2.6 miles up Hwy 90 from Stop 5. There are no safe places we recommend for pull-offs. Their campsite for August 22, 1776 would be near here.
